Topics include the development of the modern system of capital punishment; the responsibilities and experiences of attorneys, jurors, prison personnel and others in its implementation; the social network of death row; and empirical research on deterrence, sentencing disparities by race, the death penalty's fiscal impact, the estimated probability of miscarriages of justice, and other issues in the current policy debate.     Introduction to methods of social research. Provides students with basic understanding of how to conduct and evaluate scientific research in the social sciences. Course topics follow the major steps in design and execution of social research from definition of the problem and formulation of hypotheses to interpretation of results and preparation of final report.
