Prerequisite: SPN 353 or SPN 354. Following a chronological perspective, studies the writings of some of the most important women writers of Spanish America. These works illustrate the evolution of a form of writing that seeks to oppose stereotypes imposed by a male literary tradition. The selected authors represent different literary movements and reflect on a variety of national problems. They also provide the framework for the analysis of cultural images of gender and relevant theoretical concepts related to female writing. After a brief introduction of the cultural conditions that define the emergence of female writing 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, emphasis will be given to the second half of the 20th century and to the social and political context relevant to each text. 3 Cr.
