This is the second course at the intermediate level in electricity and magnetism, one of the well-established core areas of Physics. It provides an in-depth study of magnetism, electrodynamics and electromagnetic waves, at a level necessary for a physics major/minor, building on the material introduced in Electricity & Magnetism I. (Three one-hour lectures per week) Prerequisite: PHY 3335.

This is the first half of the 2-semester laboratory sequence focusing on important experiments in Modern Physics. The experiments performed in this course complement the lectures of Modern Physics I. It is recommended that this course be taken concurrently with Modern Physics I. (One three-hour laboratory period per week). Prerequisites: PHY 3332, PHY 3132; Co-requisite: PHY 4301.

This course is a study of twentieth century physics. Topics covered include relativity, elementary quantum physics, atomic structure, elementary nuclear physics and fundamental particles. (Three one-hour lectures per week) Prerequisites: PHY 3332, PHY 3132.

This course is a continuation of Modern Physics I. Topics covered include particle wave duality, Bohr atom, hydrogen atom, atomic and molecular structure, statistical mechanics nuclear physics and fundamental particle physics. (Three one-hour lectures per week) Prerequisites: PHY 4301, PHY 4101.

Elementary Portuguese I is a proficiency-oriented course designed to help students develop language skills in all areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will be required to make extensive use of the language laboratory. No previous knowledge of Portuguese is required. (Four periods per week)

This is a continuation of Elementary Portuguese I and culminates in graduated readings, class discussions, and compositions. (Four periods per week) Prerequisites: POR 1311.

This course continues to develop the fundamental language skills in Portuguese: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Through structured practice in reading authentic texts, composition, listening comprehension, and conversation, this course trains students in active proficiency. Students will also continue to learn about the cultures of Brazil and the rest of the Portuguese-speaking world. Independent work in the Language Laboratory is an integral part of this course. (Four periods per week) Prerequisite: POR 1312 or assignment by placement examination.

This course continues POR 2311, with special attention to literary and non-literary texts of increasing complexity. Classroom discussions in Portuguese, emphasis on situational and functional use of the oral language, extensive guided and free compositions, and independent work in the Language Laboratory are integral parts of this course. Review and expansion of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are included. (Four periods per week) Prerequisite: POR 2311 or assignment by placement examination.

This course provides intensive oral practice in Portuguese with a strong focus on topics of current interest. Students will read texts on popular culture and current events, and they will watch and listen to audiovisual materials available on-line in preparation for classroom discussion. The course also provides a deeper understanding of the phonology of spoken Portuguese and practice in phonetic accuracy. Prerequisite: POR 2312 or assignment by placement examination.
