This ensemble focuses on the development of performance skills on various components of a steel drum ensemble and the playing of traditional and non-traditional literature for the ensemble. This group is comprised of music and non-music majors. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor.

This course reviews the fundamentals of music notation and proceeds to the study of melody, period structures, decorative pitches, diatonic triads, and simple harmonization of melody and bass. Equal emphasis will be placed on four-part writing, free harmonization analysis, and keyboard studies. Co-requisite: MUS 1101. (Three hours per week.)

A continuation of Theory I, this course proceeds to the study of simple binary forms, diatonic sevenths, secondary dominants, and modulation. Prerequisite: MUS 1201. (Three hours per week.)

This is a developmental course covering the fundamentals of music notation, major and minor key signature identification and notation, writing of major and minor scales, and the identification and writing of simple and compound time signatures. The recognition and construction of major, minor, diminished, and augmented triads will also be a focus as well as writing in the bass, tenor, and alto clefs. The computer laboratory and appropriate software will be utilized for out-of-class drill. (Two hours per week.)

This course presents techniques and materials used in playing a church service, including improvisation, accompanying, and conducting from the console. Practical experience in playing actual services will be given. Students must have experience in piano and/or organ and be exposed to hymn playing and sight-reading. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. (Two hours per week.)

In this course, sight singing is continued at higher levels of difficulty. Students must be able to take dictation, including modulation, sevenths, and other chromatic harmonies. Prerequisite: MUS 1102. (Two hours per week.)

This course includes more sight singing at higher levels of difficulty. Dictation will include augmented sixth, quartal, quintal, and modal harmonies, and ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth chords. Prerequisite: MUS 2101. (Two hours per week.)

This course is designed to provide a functional foundation for playing chords of diverse voicing with selected melodic structures. Reading of charts will be emphasized. This course may be repeated up to eight times for credit. (Two hours per week.)

Basic singing techniques are taught through appropriate song materials and technical exercises. Group and individual activities are included in these courses. Special attention is given to helping non-vocal majors develop a working knowledge and use of the voice. Classes are open to all students with instructors' permission. This course is required of all non-vocal music majors in the music teacher education program. (Two hours per week.)

This techniques course provides actual experience on instruments. The fingering, care, and adjustments of the instrument are a part of the training. The selection of instruments, literature, and technical studies appropriate for various levels of development will be discussed. The application of technique to solo and ensemble playing and an introduction to all instruments of the family will be included. (Two hours per week.)
