This research-based seminar course is designed for the advanced study of the African experience in America from seventeenth-century through the colonial-enslavement period, civil war and civil rights eras, and the contemporary period. The course will examine the "African" dimension of "African American" life apractice in the context of African cultural and historical continuity. This examination will include an interdisciplinary exploration of cultural expressions, religious orientations, language,mannerism, food, folklore, political and social thought, educational efforts, and family and community life. Such an approach will offer experiential outlets for students to conduct research in the special collections of Duke University, UNC-Chapel, and the state archives in Raleigh, as well as present their findings through a research symposia organized by the instructor and students.
