Its purpose is to offer a blend of classical and modern topics, which are organized in three parts: 1. the natural sequence of developmental stages from gametogenesis and fertilization to histogenesis; 2. the differential gene expression; and 3. a series of core topics including pattern formation, sex determination, hormonal control, and growth. Examples are picked as they serve best to illustrate the general points to be made.
