Independent study through teaching in particular Africana studies course. Course instructor directs students in preparation of syllabi, other course materials, devising and reading examinations; lecturing and/or leading discussion; academic counseling. May be repeated for a total of no more than eight credits. Credit may not be earned in conjunction with course in which student is currently enrolled. Does not satisfy major or Harpur Distribution requirements. Prerequisites: consent of instructor. Pass/Fail only.

A historically organized look at the broad evolution of humans and humanity. Starts with general processes of biological change, turns to comparison with primates and interpretation of the fossil record. As human capacities for culture increase, so does reliance on learned behavior and the diversity of adaptations to environment. General processes of cultural change contribute to understanding how and why current cultural adaptations exist, leading to consideration of the ways humans have organized themselves in societies.

Introduction to the plurality of communication patterns in the U.S., with particular attention to at least three of the following communities: African American, American Indian, Asian American, European American and Latino American; links between cultural groups and different communication and discourse patterns; language and identity; ways in which communication differences affect intercultural interaction.

Topical issues related to sex, food, drugs, disease and religion will be introduced within a traditional framework of Western thought, contrasted with non-traditionally Western practices, and then discussed within the context of our increasingly interconnected global society. Lectures will be given by a team of anthropology faculty and graduate students.

Human past as seen through examination of some great archaeological sites of world, such as Stonehenge, King Tut's tomb, Mesa Verde, Moundville, Teotihuacan, Olduvai Gorge, Pompeii, pyramids of Gaza, Sutton Hoo ship burial, Ur, Nazca.
