Introduction to digital video recording and editing using Mini DV-based editing software and cameras. This course further advances shooting and editing concepts and techniques pertinent to video in areas such as planning, montage, image manipulation, multi-screen installations, video art and/or experimental documentary. Emphasis is given to discovery and developing an awareness, sensitivity and critical mind for a creative and resourceful use of the medium. Prerequisites: CINE 121,122 and 252 or 253.

A project-based workshop for artists already engaged in a practice that incorporates aspects of digital media in photographic images. Through an extended investigation into notions of spatialization and display in contemporary media art, student work will be expected to engage with the political and social implications of form in the present. We will look at and discuss different strategies and techniques such as digital cinT-romans, computer-based display, photo and video installation, agit-prop art, and self-published projects. This class examines pertinent texts including but not limited to essays by David Harvey, Jacques Ranciere, Claire Bishop, Rosalind Krauss, Jeff Wall, Walter Benjamin, Victor Burgin, Martha Rosler, and Allan Sekula. Students must have one of the following: CINE 257/ 286P Intro to Digital Photography, an art studio course, an art history course, CINE 122, CINE 252, or permission of instructor.

Special topics workshop in a particular area of media with emphasis on developing hands-on skills and experience in certain technologies. Examples can include film processing, transfers of images from analog to digital and chemical to electronic, webpage development, DVD production and other media methods. Course content is focused on ?process? in the workshop environment. Offered on a limited basis. By permission of instructor. Credits do not count toward the cinema major or Harpur major.

Introduction to digital sound manipulation and mixing, as well as crew procedures and editing with film and digital video. Conceptualization and development of audio/visual material for a project. Cinematography, lighting are also major areas covered. Emphasis is given to discovery and developing an awareness, sensitivity and a critical mind for a creative and resourceful use of the medium. A major project is expected from this class. Prerequisites: CINE 121, 122, 252, 351 and CINE 353/ 453, or consent of instructor.

Exploration of tools for use in creating personal visual works. Discussions and critiques, as well as demonstrations of the possibilities inherent in optical printing, hand processing, digital collage with film output and more. Student experimentation and discovery in the areas of digital and analog film and video are highly valued. Prerequisites: CINE 351 and CINE 353/ 453, or consent of instructor.

Advanced projects in production area, such as paracinema, group production in film or video, advanced sound techniques. Prerequisites: CINE 353/ 453 and 351, or consent of instructor. May be repeated for credit.

Independent study by means of teaching a particular course in cinema. Various assignments closely directed by instructor, including assistance in the development of syllabi and other course materials, construction and reading of examinations, lecturing and/or discussion leadership, studio supervision, academic counseling of students. May be repeated for total of no more than eight credits. Credit may not be earned in conjunction with course in which student is concurrently enrolled.
