Develops students' linguistic competence in doing business with China and improves their understanding of China's cultural background, business environment, economic situation and investment prospects. Subjects include business negotiation, business letter writing, business document translation and business oral presentation. Classroom activities are task-based and largely in the form of real-world simulations. Students also have the opportunity to report on topics and materials relevant to their own majors. This course introduces important Chinese works of fiction and poetry of the 20th century, tracing the development of modern Chinese literature from the reaction against traditional literature and the classical language in the 1910s and ?20s through the reaction against socialist realism and ?Maospeak? beginning in the late 1970s. In addition to analyzing the relationship between literature and its historical context, students will also be introduced to some theoretical approaches used in the study of Chinese literature and culture. Linguistic characteristics of Chinese, Japanese and Korean through a survey of the sound, writing, grammatical systems, historical development, and social environments of these languages by comparing them with other languages, particularly with English. We will consider a wide array of phenomena in East Asian languages, focusing on how three languages are different in the choice of linguistic form. It also aims at a general understanding of linguistic structure of three languages, with emphasis on their relationship with English structure. Students will read poems by Li Bai and Du Fu in the original Chinese version. Each poem is followed by a short essay of analysis and appreciation, which discusses the poem?s linguistic, historical, literary, and philosophical aspects. Thus, this course combines Chinese language and literature, classical and modern Chinese, and poetry and prose. Prerequisite: three years of Chinese language or equivalent.

This is an advanced course of Chinese language and culture. Students will read passages from the Analects (Lunyu) of Confucius, or Kongzi ( 551-479 BCE), in its original text and the accompanying exegeses and illustrative stories in modern Chinese, with focuses on these passages? linguistic, literary, and philosophical aspects. Thus, this course combines Chinese language and philosophy, classical and modern Chinese, as well as expository and narrative writings. Prerequisite: three years of Chinese language or equivalent

Close reading of historical, philosophical and literary texts written in the classical Chinese language, including selections from the Analects (Lunyu), Historical Records (Shiji) and Tang poetry. Students develop vocabulary and grammatical structure essential to the reading of classical Chinese texts while improving their understanding of Chinese literary heritage and human experience in the broad context of Chinese history.
