Primarily for majors; advanced problems in graphic design. Applied graphic communication problems (book, symbol, layout, etc.); some work in typography.Introduction to computer graphics. Advanced photo reproduction methods. Prerequisites: ARTS 210, 310.

This course is designed to expand on the computer skills taught in ARTS 305. Class will continue on the Macintosh platform using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Using a variety of design agency projects, students will learn how to use all three applications in concert to create a professional product from conception to finished files. Real world production issues will be addressed and a digital workflow will be established. Topics covered will include file application from print to web, 4 color printing, typical ad specifications, job process, exhibit production, website design and production, troubleshooting files, production terminology and communication skills. This is a lecture and lab class. Prerequisite: ARTS 305

Problems independently conceived and developed in plastics, wood, stone or metal. Figurative, non-figurative, foundry techniques, environmental work. Prerequisites: ARTS 171, 230, 331.

Provides participants with training through presentation and practice of art foundry procedures. Emphasis on lost-wax or cire perdue method, with sand mold casting also available. All work cast in bronze. Each student may expect to complete three or four pieces of moderate dimension. All steps necessary to cast a piece discussed and practiced; conceptual work and criticism, wax work, mold making, metallurgy, the burnout and pour, repair, chasing, patina and bases. Prerequisite: ARTS 230, 331 or consent of instructor. Sometimes offered as special summer workshop.

Emphasis on papermaking method as used for sculpture. Direct construction and mold-making methods are used. Prerequisites: ARTS 230, 331.

Exploration and experimentation in painting, on more individual basis, to develop personal form of expression. Prerequisites: ARTS 240, 340.

Enables the student to compile projects taken from previous design classes and/or other art disciplines into a presentation (portfolio) that is usually used for possible employment opportunities or for applying to other design schools. Open to majors and minors in studio art.

Building on basic photographic skills acquired in ARTS 161, students compile a semester-long body of work - a subjective and personal vision of a theme or topic chosen by themselves. Topics covered include techniques for photographing quickly and unobtrusively, photographing people in their environments and critical self-editing.
