3.00 Credits
Training in the Arabic dialect spoken in contemporary Egypt and especially Cairo. Vocabulary development and exposure to increasingly more sophisticated sentence structures. Allows for achieving a proficiency level in spoken Egyptian Arabic adequate for day-to-day practical and social situations. Almost exclusively aural/oral in orientation and using a system of transcription based on the English alphabet, which is normal for the study of Arabic dialects. Reviews for the interested student the Arabic script and writing system of Modern Standard Arabic. Prepares the foundation for more advanced work in spoken Egyptian Arabic and allows for the transition to study of modern written Arabic (i.e., Modern Standard Arabic) if one desires. Use of film clips, songs and TV programs. Prerequisites: ARAB 110 or consent of instructor. For majors and non-majors.

3.00 Credits
Elementary level of spoken Egyptian Arabic comparable to 110?111, but using the Arabic script as opposed to a transliteration system based on English letters. Hence, a prerequisite is that students already know the letters of the Arabic alphabet. The course follows lessons from a standard textbook as well as exercises and activities prepared by the instructor, especially audio-visual ones based on Egyptian movies and television. Like the 110?111 sequence, the 115?116 course focuses on listening and speaking but at the same time assigns simple reading drills and exercises that reinforce listening and speaking skills. Culture, and especially popular culture, is also a part of the learning process.
