Introductory treatment to selected topics in physics of solids. Simple and concrete models, using classical or elementary quantum-mechanical ideas. Prerequisite: PHYS 421

Covers mathematical methods and their applications that are required for understanding physics such as quantum mechanics, electromagnetism and classical mechanics. The content is as follows: 1) differential equations (Schrodinger equations, Maxwell equation, diffusion equation, Helmholtz equation); 2) Eigen-value problems (Sturm-Liouville theory, Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization); 3) function of a complex variable (Cauchy?s integral theorem, Laurent expansion); 4) integral transforms (Fourier transform, Laplace transform, Bromwich-Wagner integrals); 5) integral equations (Green function); 6) method of variations (Euler equation, Lagrange equation); 7) special functions (associated Legendre functions, Bessel functions); 8) group theory. For majors and non-majors who want to learn mathematical methods in physics such as quantum mechanics and electromagnetic theory. Prerequisites: PHYS 331 or 341, MATH 471.

Individual research under direct supervision of faculty member. Prior to registration, student must consult instructor and receive approval of problem to be investigated and departmental approval for course credit. Prerequisite: consent of department.

Independent work on special problems. To receive the honor of ?Distinguished Independent Work in Physics,? candidate must write and defend a thesis based on research. Prerequisite: consent of department.

American political institutions, processes, behavior, relationships among cultural, legal, social aspects of American political system. Applications to contemporary issues and events.

The impact of values and worldviews upon the behavior of groups and states; religion, language, class, ethnicity, race, gender and ideology in their international implications. Analysis of both East-West relations and North-South tensions from the perspective of political culture, including an exploration into the culture causes of war.

Major institutions, processes, policy problems of government and politics in representative, democratic, totalitarian and modernizing political systems. A student earning credit for PLSC 113 may not earn credit for PLSC 118 or SOC 118.

Major types of Western political theory, representative thinkers such as Plato, Hobbes, Mill, Marx. Application of ideas of these and other theorists to contemporary politics.

Concepts and issues comprising systematic understanding of contemporary world politics; nation-state, sovereignty and nationalism in international system; ideologies, economic imperialism, functions of international law and organizations; changing political and economic relationships; war, violence, deterrence.
