This course will include both philosophical study about literature and the exploration of philosophical topics through the study of literary works. The issues concerning literature that may be discussed include the distinctness of literary value, the ethical status of representations, the cognitive value of fictional discourse, and the significance of genre or style. Literary works will be examined in terms of issues such as agency, identity, and value. This course may also incorporate the study of films. Prerequisites: one course in philosophy.
