    Fundamental techniques in writing for instruments in various combinations. May be selected as restricted music major elective with consent of departmental adviser and instructor. Prerequisite: MUS 217.

    Gives student understanding of the craft of composition. Styles explored include classical music of 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and some popular songs. Techniques studied include writing different types of melodies and accompaniments and writing in different forms. Students acquire fluency in committing musical ideas to paper in weekly composition and analysis assignments and in larger final project. 20th-century literature explored in listening and reading assignments. Lecture, discussion and improvisation exercises. Prerequisite: MUS 217.

    A skill-based course designed to examine and develop the physical gestures of conducting instrumental and vocal ensembles and famliarize the student with musical terms important to the understanding and interpretation of music for performing ensembles. Lectures, in-class conducting, and small group lessons introduce the traditional conducting gestures and ensemble communication skills. Techniques of conducting with and without a baton are discussed and compared. Prerequisites: Students must have completed Music Theory and Musicianship II and demonstrate competent music reading skills. Ability to play an instrument and/or sing is expected. 4 cr.

    Continuation and expansion of materials and techniques presented in MUS 427. May be selected as restricted music major elective with consent of departmental adviser and instructor. Prerequisite: MUS 427. 2 cr.

    Independent study by means of teaching in particular course in Music Department. Various assignments closely directed by instructor in that course, including development of syllabi and other course materials; construction and reading of examinations; lecturing and/or discussion leadership; laboratory supervision; academic counseling of students. May be repeated for total of no more than eight credits. Credit may not be earned in conjunction with course in which student is concurrently enrolled.
