Assessment and instruction related to children?s and adolescents? classroom reading and writing difficulties, both strengths and needs. Examination, analysis and demonstration of naturalistic and standardized assessment protocols and appropriate teaching strategies for addressing strengths and needs. Emphasis on authentic classroom assessment and literacy learning. Students prepare a case report on one child or adolescent and a portfolio of classroom assessment and teaching tools.

This course is designed to assist content area teachers, reading teachers and special education teachers in developing a full picture of adolescent literacy and understanding the literacy demands of content area courses. In this course, teachers will study classroom practices that help diverse students connect new information to prior knowledge, use the structure and format of reading materials to guide comprehension, and use literacy in a variety of ways to enhance their learning. Teachers will design, prepare, and implement materials to use in their own subject areas. Minimum of 35 hours fieldwork required.

Specific topics vary from semester to semester. Attention may focus on social, psychological, historical, political or contemporary issues. Exploration in depth of the impact of various topics on current public and private school practices.

Supervised field experience (B-6 or 5-12) provides practice, demonstration, self-evaluation and validation of competencies gained in the literacy program. Seminar provides: a). opportunity for planning, feedback and evaluation with input from peers and faculty; b). opportunity to develop skills and strategies for the consulting role with parents, teachers and other school and community personnel. Prerequisites: Matriculation in the Literacy Education program, all required courses for literacy certification, and consent of the instructor. Graded S/U only.

Supervised field experience provides practice, demonstration, self-evaluation and validation of competencies gained in the literacy program. Opportunities to: provide literacy assessment and instruction for students with literacy difficulties, work collaboratively with other professionals and as a resource and consultant for a school literacy program. Prerequisites: Completion of Literacy Education program and consent of adviser. Graded S/U. 50 hours of fieldwork required.

College credit given only to students with deficiencies in the mathematics admission requirement. Not open to students who have credit for any higher-numbered mathematics course. fall only
