ANTH 476: Museums And The Art of Exhibitions

An introduction to museums and their relationship to the public. Includes an overview of the history of exhibiting material culture in museums. The main aim is to mount an exhibit of material from the recent past in the Binghamton area, collected by course participants. Students learn to create appropriate texts to accompany the exhibited material and to arrange an exhibit space at Binghamton University. This is done in conjunction with theoretical readings about the planning of museum spaces. Prerequisite: ANTH 167 or 169, or consent of instructor.

Conceptual, analytical and mechanical means of creating and reproducing images in value and color on two-dimensional surfaces. Enriches visual and verbal vocabulary of both art and non-art majors. Techniques presented include most of those needed and used by graphic designers. Problems given not applied, but theoretical, suited for the inexperienced as well as those with experience in other forms of visual arts. Work is not produced on computer. Prerequisite: ARTS 171.
