HIST 474: Colonial Culture in India and Indochina
3.00 Credits
SUNY at Binghamton
Focuses comparatively on French ?Indochina? and British India, examining how the cultural repertoire of European imperialism constructed the binary of East and West by invoking the spiritual, the occult and the divine; adventure, discovery and conquest; exoticism, sensuality and eroticism. By exploring colonial discourse, orientalist knowledge and the ?civilizing mission,? we will analyze how representations are infused with the politics of empire. The course also studies the impact of orientalist fantasies on colonized people, and how India and ?Indochina? were sites of competition and struggle that affected metropolitan cultural identity as well.
