HIST 276: Modern Latin America

Overview of 19th- and 20th-century Latin America. Topics include independence movements and nation formation; export economies; political ideologies; slavery and emancipation; repression and resistance; revolutions and social movements; and inter-American relations. Dynamics of race, class and gender are considered throughout. Students develop skills in analyzing documentary sources, evaluating scholarly texts and writing essays.
