RS 205: Religion And Ecology
3.00 Credits
St. Joseph's University New York
The goal of this course is for students to attain an understanding of Earth, its living creatures, and its life-giving system as a matter of religious faith and ethical concern. The course will open with a brief exploration of scientific discoveries about the origins of the universe and the interrelatedness of all life on this planet, counterposed with current threats to ecological well being due to human activity. The course will draw on biblical texts, classical doctrines of creation, incarnation, redemption, and eschatology so that students will focus on resources of the Jewish and Christian traditions as well as the world religions that contribute to valuing rather than ignoring the natural world. In dialogue with official church statements and with essays from first and third world theologians including feminist theologians, students will examine the connections between ecological justice and social justice. 3 hours a week, 1 semester, 3 credits.
