HS 3922: Nationalism in the Middle East

This course will examine the history and diverse development of nationalism(s) in the Middle East beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century and continuing to the present day. Nationalism in the Middle East is one of the most important issues in the contemporary world as evidenced by the controversies over Palestinian statehood and the attempts of expansionist nationalism by Iraq in the 1990s. After considering various theories of nationalism and their applicability to the Middle East, the course will address nationalism as manifested in the region with particular reference to Arab, Turkish, and Iranian nationalisms.
