3 Credits, 3 Hours SPE 101 has the fundamental aim of teaching students to speak clearly, effectively, substantively and with purpose for a given audience. Each student will compose and deliver a variety of speeches such as to inform, to persuade, to actuate, to demonstrate, and each will learn the underlying skills like choosing a topic, researching a topic, organizing material into an effective speech, using the voice and body to communicate effectively. The student will also learn the principle of group discussions and take part in a group project.

3 Credits, 3 Hours This course is designed to help the ESL student communicate more effectively in English. The course will include elements of listening, presentation, interpersonal communication, public speaking, voice and speech improvement, non-verbal communication, group discussion and interviewing skills. Enrollment is limited to international students.

3 Credits, 3 Hours The object of this course is to help international students improve their voice and articulation ability since oral communication is a primary requirement for success in this society. This course provides an opportunity for our international students to master their skills. Training in general American speech for international students, designed to minimize first-language influence upon English pronunciation. Also, exercises in breath control and correct voice production to improve vocal quality, range, rate, and power are included. Each student receives individual attention.

3 Credits, 3 Hours Prerequisite: There is no prerequisite for native speakers, however international students must place at the advanced ESL level or better. This course is designed to develop a student's sensitivity to the understanding of communication needs of people from different cultures. The classroom will serve as a laboratory in which international and native-born students will engage in interpersonal communication.

1 Credit, 1 Hour This course examines the crucial elements affecting direct, face-to-face communication. Awareness of and sensitivity to one's self and to others are seen as determinants of how and why we speak and l isten to one another. So too, interpersonal communication skills are vital and necessary tools in forging and maintaining personal relationships, as well as contributing to effectiveness in the workplace and in the community. As America diversifies and participates in the global marketplace excellent communication skills are increasingly important for professional careers in any field as well as for a more fulfilling life.

1 Credit, 1 Hour Listening is a basic and necessary ski ll within the communication process. Nevertheless, effective listening is a learned behavior. Skillful listening is needed in professional, personal, cross-cultural, and educational environments. It also should be noted that there are specific listening behaviors that are often unique to the aforementioned environments. This relationship will also be explored and examined in this course. Ultimately, the student will study, analyze, evaluate, and apply the strategies for effective l isteni ng, resulting in an increased comprehension of the techniques needed for effective listening.

1 Credit, 1 Hour This course reflects the growing sophistication with which interviewing is being approached. It will deal with the most common form of purposeful planned communication, namely the interview. It is the study of the principles and techniques used in the various forms of interviewing in the public, professional, organizational and governmental settings. Students will be introduced to the basic skills applicable to all interviews and to specific ski l ls needed in specialized settings. This course is designed for a five-week format.

3 Credits, 3 Hours Prerequisite: SPE 101, OTA major or permission of the Discipline Coordinator An analysis of a participation in the various forms of small group communication: symposium, panel discussion, case conference and colloquium, and interviewing. The classroom, the media and the community will be used as outlets for projects.

3 Credits, 3 Hours Students wi ll study the art and science of persuasion as well as the role of power in influencing public opinion. In examining the theory and practice of persuasion, students will learn to distinguish between legitimate persuasive strategies and propaganda techniques. The class will examine persuasive techniques in a variety of settings including advertising, marketing and political campaigns. In-class debates and other activities will be used to develop students' persuasive skills. This course is recommended for pre-law students.
