3 Credits, 3 Hours Prerequisite: ENG102 This is an introductory course to the field of professional education, examining it from historical, sociological, psychological and philosophical perspectives. Topics include: financing, administration and control of U.S. education, multi-cultural education, professional preparation, certification, curriculum models, legal and moral responsibilities of teachers and societal challenges for educators. Classroom observations and a professional interview are required.

3 Credits, 3 Hours This course offers a systematic study of human interaction in contemporary society. It examines major social institutions and processes - socialization, the family, sex roles, stratification, deviance and social control, race and ethnicity, and also analyzes the forces, which change or stabilize society. One of the course's main objectives is to increase our understanding of the social environment and of the dynamic interaction between an individual and society.

3 Credits, 3 Hours This course examines one of the greatest social i nstitutions: the family. We will study various family structures and functions across cultures; relationships of the family to other social institutions; the significance of the family in the process of socialization; contemporary alternatives to the traditional family; and the adaptation of the family to the changi ng environment. Attention will also be given to the impact of the changing economy upon the modern family as well as other problems facing today.

The study of crime and other deviant behaviors in the United States, including juvenile delinquency and organized crime; trends in punishment, treatment and prevention; and the relation of crime to personal and cultural conditions. Theories of causation are discussed. Field trips to correctional institutions are included.

3 Credits, 3 Hours This course explores the question of what society considers deviant behavior. Topics include predatory acts directed against persons and property (including murder, rape and robbery) and alternative lifestyles in marriage and sexual behavior. Attention is given to the relationship between deviance and conformity in a rapidly changing society.

3 Credits, 3 Hours Prerequisite: ENG101 and ENG 102 concurrently An interdisciplinary course with special emphasis on the relevant sociological principles impacting views of U.S. Latino/as and the way in which their artistic production, in the form of literature, reflects the lived realities of the three major ethnic subgroups (i.e. Chicano/a, Cubano/a, and Puerto Rican).

4 hours, 4 credits. First semester of a one-year course in the Spanish language focusing on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. A complete overview of the grammar is provided, as well as an introduction to Hispanic/Latino culture and civilization. Students may also work individually and in small groups with audio tapes, computer software and websites. For students who have no experience with Spanish language.

4 Credits, 4 Hours Prerequisite: SPA 101 or one-two years ofhi$i school Spanish This is the second semester of a one-year course in the Spanish language focusing on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. A complete overview of the grammar is provided, as well as an introduction to Hispanic culture and civilization. Students may also work individually with audiocassettes and computer software.

4 Credits, 4 Hours Prerequisite: SPA 102 or two-three years ofhigi school Spanish or competency at appropriate level This course reviews the fundamentals of Spanish grammar, with emphasis on developing proficiency in aural, oral, reading and writing skills. Selected themes, together with cultural essays, literary excerpts and news articles in Spanish, aim to broaden student insight into Hispanic life and civilization.

4 Credits, 4 Hours Prerequisite: SPA 201 or two-three years ofhigi school Spanish or competency at appropriate level Through selected themes, this course provides exposure to contemporary Spanish and Hispanic-American literature, culture and art, as well as reinforces more advanced and complex grammatical structures.
