This course is a cooperative program between industry and education and is designed to integrate the student's technical studies with industrial experience. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to write complete essays exhibiting unity, coherence, adequate and appropriate development, and comparative freedom from errors in grammar, mechanics, and usage. Grades will be A, B, C, or F. To pass, a student must earn at least a C average for the semester grade and pass an exit essay. Assignment to English 1103 may be required upon evaluation of the student's ACT score and/or his/her performance on standard writing assignments administered during the first week of classes. This class meets for three hours of lecture and practice per week; students who fail to pass a skill or who need additional assistance on specific skills are advised to attend the Learning Lab. This composition class should foster improved thinking and writing skills, resulting in relatively error-free discourse on a consistent basis. Through the completion of in-class exercises and presentations utilizing word processors and the internet, students will learn a variety of methods for generating and conveying ideas, with emphasis on syntax, clarity, and support. Each essay will contain a thesis sentence, an introduction, support for assertions, and a conclusion. Additionally, through the study of model essays, students will learn to discuss the structure of compositions intelligently. They will also learn to recognize errors in reasoning. If deemed necessary by the instructor, a grammar review will be incorporated into the course. Three hours of lecture/practice per week. Credit, three semester hours

Prerequisite: ENG 1113. This course incorporates the basic skills of research and interpretation, continuation of the study of composition skills, and an introduction to literature with emphasis on literary types. Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to write an acceptable research paper, to read selected literary works with greater understanding and enjoyment, to write compositions based on various analyses of these readings using acceptable edited American English, and to score at least 70 percent on an objective test based on materials presented during this course. This course reviews the fundamental rules of grammar with which the elementary teacher must be familiar in order to teach language skills. The study includes a review of parts of speech, sentence patterns, pronoun usage, verb properties, spelling, diction, punctuation, and mechanics. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate his/her proficiency by scoring at least 70 percent average on the materials covered during the course. Requirements will include assigned readings concerning language. Recommended prerequisites: ENG 1113 and ENG 1123. Credit, three semester hours
