The development of law enforcement and the criminal justice system from early times to the modern day is explored in this course. The role of the various components of the criminal justice system is discussed. The responsibilities of various federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies are discussed and compared. The juvenile justice system is also examined from its historical roots to the present. Minnesota statutes regarding juvenile procedures as well as juvenile rights as interpreted by the U.S. Supreme Court are discussed and analyzed.

This course is designed as a tool for law enforcement personnel who are likely to find themselves in a situation necessitating the capability to speak Spanish and where a Spanish speaking officer is not immediately available. These situations could prove to be life threatening to the officer, the suspect, or law abiding citizens.

3.00 Credits
The learner receives basic instruction in first responder. The course enables learners to develop the basic skills in the emergency care area as a peace officer and first responder. This course meets the DOT, Minnesota State College and Universities System, EMSRB, AHA, state, and POST standards. The learner successfully completes the course by "passing all written and practical skill exams of the course."The lowest percentage accepted for card issuance is sixty-eight percent. If a learner "fails" to meet any of the course requirements,the learner must withdraw from the course.

Learners receive instruction in police interaction regarding victimization, hate/bias motivated crimes, domestic abuse, people with disabilities, and racial and ethnic diverse populations. Contemporary community policing concepts are taught. This course meets Minnesota Police Standards and Training (POST) requirements.

This course is designed as a tool for law enforcement personnel who are likely to find themselves in a situation necessitating the capability to speak Spanish and where a Spanish speaking officer is not immediately available. These situations could prove to be life threatening to the officer, the suspect, or law abiding citizens. This advanced class reinforces previously learned material and practices realistic scenarios in which slang and contemporary Spanish could be encountered.

During this course, time is split between an introduction and history of the Criminal Justice System in the United States and the Juvenile Justice System in Minnesota. The curriculum includes an in depth study of law enforcement in Minnesota. This includes the peace officer licensing system, career opportunities, hiring standards, and state mandated policies. The course delivery methods include lectures, discussion, and debates on current issues.

Learners are taught the proper construction and preparation of police reports using Minnesota POST approved style. Emphasis is also placed on spelling, word usage, and police terminology. Basic writing skills are emphasized. Job search skills, resume writing, and application letter writing are also taught. Prerequisite: ENGL1410 or ENGL1460.

This course familiarizes the learner with the proper mental, physical, and tactical responses to safely deal with the wide variety of situations that can occur during normal police patrol. Instruction is in the safe and tactical handling of firearms (semi-automatic pistol, shotgun, and carbine). The course also enables the learner to understand the methods of dealing with a critical incident (before and after it occurs). Prerequisite: LENF1604 and PHED1406.

4.00 Credits
This course examines the fundamentals of crime scene and post-crime scene investigation. Delivery of this instruction involves lecture and practical experience in each phase of the criminal investigative procedure. Learners examine the investigative continuum by involving themselves in a case scenario that includes actions taken by the initial officer on the scene, examination of the secured crime scene, and the methods involved in the collection of evidence. Learners continue the scenario in the secondary investigative phase that involves the interview process, drafting and execution of search warrants, interrogation of suspects, and case preparation. This course requires the learner to demonstrate utilization of both interpersonal skills and hands-on application of evidence collection techniques. This course meets the Minnesota POST requirements. Prerequisite: LENF1604 and LENF1607.

4.00 Credits
Learners receive instruction in theory, operation, and use of the latest radar units and police radio. There is also emphasis in DWI, alcohol and drug, and traffic enforcement. Learners also perform defensive driving techniques. The course enables the learner to develop basic skills in crash scene management as required by Minnesota POST. Prerequisite: LENF1607 and LENF9900.
