Topics include migration, housing, employment, education, race and racism, machismo, and the Puerto Rican woman. The topic Introduces students to novels, short stories, essays and films that portray main urban centers in Latin America. Discusses issues raised by the representation of Mexico City, Medellin, Buenos Aires, Lima, and Santiago. Focuses on topics such as: violence, urban isolation, globalization, political upheavals, migration, and collective memory. Staff.

Critically examines texts ranging from the conquest, the colonial era, the wars of independence, the dictatorships of the 20th century, and the present. Covers topics including Spanish views of America and its peoples, the role of writers as advocates for independence, the emergence of the gaucho, and the tension between literary expression and authoritarianism. Studies 19th century realist writers such as P?rez Gald?s, Clar?n, and Pardo Baz?n; 20th century neorealists like Carmen Laforet; and recent novelists like Mart?n Gaite and Rosa Montero.
