The major issues addressed are the various components of ethnic diversity, attitudes toward such diversity, and the implications these two issues hold for human service professionals. A multicultural model of communication is presented. Provides the opportunity for students considering a career in human services (teaching, mental health, criminal justice, nursing) to broaden their understanding of, and ability to function more effectively with, members of various ethic and racial groups. This interdisciplinary course explores the importance of leadership, service, and civic responsibility in a rapidly changing and increasingly complex and diverse world. It provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to assume leadership positions in their personal, community, and work lives. A range of leadership styles and theories, including concepts of diversity, ethics, and teamwork will be explored through readings, discussion, and guest speakers. The course will provide students with opportunities for Service-Learning, personal reflection, and group problem solving. Prerequisite: Placement above or successful completion on ENG 060 (EN 2103) and eligible for ENG 101 (EN 1103). This course will focus on specific social problems confronting contemporary society. Some of the topics covered will include crime, drugs, poverty, prejudice and weakened families. Students will view films that reflect and portray these issues, and complete readings that offer insights into these social problems. We will discuss the films and readings and analyze their content. Prerequisite: ENG 101 (EN 1103) General Education Electives: Behavioral Science; Social Science Note: Students who qualify may choose to take this course for honors credit.

Topics may include social inequality, economic crises, racism, violence against women and children, pollution, crime and social transmitted diseases. Making Things Happen - The course will examine and define the nature of social change and how to effectively address social issues. It will present some of the major tactics strategies that have been utilized in bringing about change such as the legislative process, coalition building, confrontation, and the use of the media. The course will analyze some of the major social movements in the United States, including the Civil Rights and Women's Movements, and how they influenced social policy and social change. Prerequisite: Placement above or successful completion of ENG 060 (EN 2103), eligible for ENG 101 (EN 1103). This course examines the patterns and evolution of criminal behavior including the impact of social forces on criminality. Topics include a study of the theoretical approaches to criminology as well as an exploration of the criminal justice system including police, courts and correctional institutions. This course examines theories and research regarding victims of crime and the treatment of victims within the criminal justice system. Current social programs such as restitution, compensation, and victims' rights will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to special victim groups; i.e., children, the elderly, and victims of family violence.
