Introduces the student to the dominant life forms of the Mesozoic era, which extended from about 240 million years to 65 million years before the present. The unifying themes used throughout the course are concerned with the evolution diversification, and classification of the dinosauria, the most familiar, successful, yet least understood terrestrial vertebrates of all time. By examining the geological and ecological setting of the Mesozoic in conjunction with the fossilized remains, the student should gain insight into the nature of these enigmatic animals. The dinosaur studies at both the professional and popular levels will also be examined, through discussion of some of the controversies surrounding dinosaur classification, extinction, physiology and behavior. Prerequisite: Placement above or successful completion of ENG 060 (EN 2103) and eligibility for ENG 101 (EN 1103). Recommendation: Concurrent enrollment in ENG 075 (EN 2122) or ENG 085 (EN 2131) if CPT reading placement test is between 68 and 75. General Education Electives: Science

3.00 Credits
Students are introduced to weather elements and observations that include atmospheric temperature, pressure, moisture, global air circulation patterns, and air masses. Understanding of the interaction of these various elements of the atmosphere is key to weather analysis and forecasting and will lead to a brief introduction to the more severe forms of weather such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and thunderstorms. A survey of materials comprising the solid earth and the processes that shape its surface. Topics include rocks and minerals, volcanoes, stream, wave, wind and glacial erosion and deposition. Principles of crystal deformation, mountain building and plate tectonics are discussed. Laboratory sessions illustrate and expand on principles and materials from the lectures. 3 hours lecture/2 hours laboratory Prerequisite: Placement above or successful completion of ENG 060 (EN 2103) and eligibility for ENG 101 (EN 1103). Traces the history of the earth and its life through time. The principles of stratigraphy and correlation are introduced and used to interpret the rock and fossil record. The evolution of the earth, atmosphere, oceans and life are emphasized. Geologic time and its measurement and a review of plate tectonics and its importance in reconstructing geologic history. Lab exercises familiarize students with various fossil groups and the techniques used in deciphering and interpreting geologic history. 3 hours lecture/2 hours laboratory Prerequisite: Placement above or successful completion of ENG 060 (EN 2103) and eligibility for ENG 101 (EN 1103).
