This course is one of four modules required to earn the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association's 475 hour Marine Technician Certificate. Concentration is on the basic operational skills required to work in a marina or boatyard environment. Participants learn the operation of various marina yard equipment, such as hoisting equipment, standard boat trailers, and hydraulic boat trailers. Also covered are the principles of rack storage, trailer road requirements, hull preparation, and fiberglass repair. Instruction includes both lecture and hands-on traiing. The other three required modules: Marine Technician Fundamentals, Marine Technician Outboard Engines, and Marine Technican Boat and Motor Systems will be taught in following semesters. Through this program, asistance in gaining a position in the recreational marine trades is offered by the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association.

This course provides an understanding of the information necessary to become an Oil Heat Technician. Topics covered begin with basics of electricity, the properties of heating oil, and the theories of combustion and emissions. Students then advance to understanding various valves and controls, ignition and venting systems, as well as tanks and piping. After gaining knowledge of these basic principles, students learn both the technical and customer-related roles involved in servicing and maintaining oil heat systems. The course combines lecture and hands-on instruction and prepares students for application for the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety Certificate of Competency for Oil Burner Technicians. There is an assumption that students have a thorough understanding of theory, as well as hands-on knowledge of oil heat systems. The focus of the course is on the material required for the State oil heat technician examination. Students also will become familiar with the test format, and will learn how to respond to various types of questions and answers. The course fee does not include the State license applicaiton fee.
