The course will focus on techniques for developing music reading skills through a repertoire of songs and singing games from which these musical concepts can be taught. Directed listening, improvisation, movement, Orff instruments, and melodic hand signs will also be important topics.

Pieces will be organized around arrangements of authentic folk music, pieces from the Orff/Keetman publications, and student compositions. Improvisation will be included in most pieces. Development of polyphonic awareness (singing a song while playing an instrument) will be an objective. Students will develop the basic technical skills for pitched percussion.
