This foundational course is designed to introduce students to concepts in professional nursing practice and to the Anna Maria College BSN nursing program. The course explores the components of professionalism, social responsibility and service in nursing practice, ethical issues in nursing, spirituality in nursing, current health issues, legislative issues in health care, nursing theorists, with emphasis on Betty Neuman's Systems Model, and career planning, including the development of the professional portfolio. Using nursing informatics, oral and written communication skills and critical thinking are stressed. No prerequisites.

The Neuman Systems model is utilized as the organizing framework in completing comprehensive wellness assessments, health promotion activities, health education, and illness prevention. Competencies in physical assessment, patient education, and oral and written communication are stressed. Enrollment is limited to 12 students. Prerequisite: NUS 301 or permission of Program Director.

This is an introductory nursing research course designed to prepare registered nurses to become critical consumers of nursing research, to utilize nursing research in practice and to develop an understanding of the research process in preparation for graduate study. Prerequisites: NUS 301, NUS 302 and Statistics.

In this clinical course, students identify variances in physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental and spiritual health, using the Neuman Systems Model. Based on this assessment, plans of care for actual and potential health problems are developed. This course prepares students to take the American Nurses' Credentialing Center Certification Examination. Enrollment is limited to 10 students. Prerequisites: NUS 301, NUS 302, NUS 304.

Using a preceptor model, students complete a practicum in acute care facilities.

This course focuses on leadership and management styles and models, mentorship, media relations, the nurse's role in the development of health care policy, and the professional nurse's responsibility to advocate for a healthy environment. Students continue the development of their professional portfolio and explore their professional growth through narrative and selfanalysis. Prerequisite: NUS 301.

This clinical course focuses on the development of competency in assisting clients with the rehabilitation/ reconstitution of long term health problems using the Neuman Systems model as an organizing framework. This course prepares students to take the American Nurses' Association Certification Examination. Enrollment is limited to 10 students. Prerequisites: NUS 301, NUS 302, NUS 304.
