Instruction on the development and use of the current New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, the 1992 Americans with Disabilities Act and their relation to residential and commercial uses of space. Prerequisites: CET 219. The course is an introduction to soil mechanics with application to problems encountered in construction and design. Topics include soil origin and nature, soil properties, field sampling, gradation, compaction, classification, permeability, soil strength. Laboratory experiments include the classification and evaluation of engineering properties of soil for predicting its behavior in accordance with ASTM and AASHTO specifications.
