Prerequisite: RDG 0800 or placement plus permission of department chair Students explore the ecology of coral reefs and a variety of associated tropical marine ecosystems such as mangrove swamps, sea grass beds, lagoons, and rocky and sandy shores. In addition, the impact of pollution, global climate change, fish, and other human influences are studied. This is a field course and requires travel to Belize, Central America. Travel costs are not included in tuition or fees. This course satisfies the general education requirement for a four-credit lab science. The trip to Belize is typically scheduled during the winter or spring break. Course fee: $60.00 (additional travel costs are required)

Prerequisite: RDG 0800 or placement Students explore the biology, geology, oceanography, climate and history of the Galapagos Island and the surrounding Humboldt Current marine ecosystem. Emphasis is also placed on the debate regarding the teaching of evolution, creationism, and intelligent design in public schools and on the issue of global ecosystem conservation. This is a field course and requires travel to the Galapagos Islands off the coast of South America. Travel costs are not included in tuition or fees. This course satisfies the general education requirement for a three -credit science or a three-credit interdisciplinary and emerging issues course. The trip to the Galapagos Islands is typically scheduled after the spring semester. Course fee: $60.00 (additional travel costs are required)

Prerequisi te: BIO 1040 or BIO 2070/2070L and BIO 2080/2080L; or permission of department chair Students learn the physiology of various human diseases and disorders. Topics include diseases and disorders of the immune, nervous, endocrine, reproductive, hemalogic, cardiovascular, lymphatic, pulmonary, urologic, digestive, musculoskeletal, and integumentary systems. Also discussed are various cancers. Offered in the spring semester.

Prerequisite: ENG 1010, and eight credits in BIO or CHE, plus 18 credits from General Studies or Arts and Sciences: Biological Sciences degree, plus permission of department chair Cooperative education allows students to combine academic study with on-the-job experience by working on paid training assignments coordinated by departmental faculty. The major objective of cooperative education is the application of classroom theory to a work environment. This course is specifically designed for students who are pursuing a degree in General Studies or Arts and Sciences: Biological Sciences. Grading in this course is pass or fail.

Prerequisite: RDG 0800 or placement and MTH 1080 or math placement Students with little or no chemistry background prepare for college-level chemistry (CHE 1200). Topics are both descriptive and mathematical and include acids and bases, atomic structure, chemical equations, chemical language, gases, molecular structure, solution chemistry, and chemical mathematics. Students may transfer into this course from CHE 1200 during the first five weeks of the semester with the signatures of the instructor and the department chair on add/drop forms. This course will probably not transfer. Grading in this course is pass or fail.

Prerequisite: RDG 0800 or placement; and MTH 1120 or math placement; and CHE 1000 or California Chemistry Diagnostic Test (score of 20 or above) Students learn fundamental principles of chemistry based on a study of the physical and chemical properties of the metallic and nonmetallic elements. Topics include the structure of matter, symbols, formulas and equations, chemical bonding, gaseous state and the kinetic molecular theory, solutions, oxidation reduction, and the periodic table. Credit for this course may be earned through Advanced Placement Examination.

Prerequisite: CHE 1200 lecture must be taken in the same or previous semester Lab work includes basic chemical lab techniques and safety precautions and experiments in volumetric and gravimetric analysis. Computer-assisted data collection and analysis is also performed. Credit for this course may be earned through Advanced Placement Examination. Course fee: $85.00
