Prerequisite: completion of 30 credits toward associate's degree, plus approval of the department chair Cooperative education allows students to combine academic study with on-the-job experience by working on paid training assignments coordinated by departmental faculty. The major objective of cooperative education is the application of classroom theory to a work environment. Offered irregularly.

Prerequisite: none Students are prepared to work as physical therapy aides in a hospital, private practice, outpatient clinic, rehabilitation unit, or nursing home. Content includes basic patient care and patient handling skills, the role of the physical therapy aide, effective communication, workplace safety, basic physical therapy terminology, and basic physical therapy aide skills. Course fee: $60.00

Prerequisite: BIO 2070/2070L and MTH 1120 and ENG 1010 and PSY 1010 must be taken in the same or a previous semester; and must be enrolled in the Physical Therapist Assistant program Students are introduced to the profession of physical therapy including the purpose, history, and practice structures. The scope of practice, ethics, and roles of the healthcare providers are included. Basic patient care procedures and documentation are taught. Course fee: $75.00

Prerequisite: PTA 1010, MTH 1120; plus BIO 2080/2080L, and PTA 1060 taken in the same or a previous semester; and must be enrolled in the Physical Therapist Assistant program Students are introduced to theory and develop skills in body mechanics, gait training, and assessment techniques. Emphasis is on competence in postural assessment, transfers, range of motion, manual muscle testing, basic therapeutic exercise, assistive devices, and massage. Disease processes and specific medical conditions seen in physical therapy are also studied. Course fee: $225.00

Prerequisite: PTA 1020, PTA 1060, BIO 2080/2080L; plus HTH 1100, PSY 2050, and PTA 1050 taken in the same or a previous semester; and must be enrolled in the Physical Therapist Assistant program Students are introduced to theory regarding the concepts of pain, peripheral vascular disease, and wound care. Included are theory and skill development in modalities and relaxation techniques with expected competency in specific units. Course fee: $225.00

Prerequisite: PTA 1020, PTA 1060; plus HTH 1100, PSY 2050, and PTA 1040 taken in the same or a previous semester; and must be enrolled in the Physical Therapist Assistant program Students participate in a concentrated clinical experience in a selected physical therapy setting for supervised application of clinical skills. Prerequisite: PTA 1010 and MTH 1120; plus BIO 2080/2080L and PTA 1020 must be taken in the same or a previous semester; and must be enrolled in the Physical Therapist Assistant program Students study the biomechanical principles involved in human movement. Content includes structure and function of joints and muscle groups and characteristics of normal posture and gait. Pathologies basic to each specific joint are reviewed. Course fee: $75.00

Skill development includes integrated rehabilitation techniques of these conditions. Course fee: $60.00
