Prerequisite: placement Students learn to write unified, coherent paragraphs. They learn to express ideas more effectively through a consideration of their audience and purpose, to arrange information to support clearly worded topic sentences, to write a variety of types of paragraphs, and to link paragraphs to form well-designed essays. Students should refer to the schedule of classes for sections of this course that are taught in computer labs. Computer- assisted sections will have an additional lab fee. The tuition for this course is equivalent to a three-credit course. Grades for this course are pass, fail, or in progress.

Prerequisite: ENG 1020 Students read selected plays from various periods and cultures and write critical analyses, essay exams, and a term paper. They learn the basic concepts of dramatic structure, genre, and conventions and the principles of analysis.

Prerequisite: ENG 1020 Students survey the development of American and English poetry with emphasis on the relationship between poems and the cultures from which they emerged.

Prerequisite: ENG 1010 Students develop writing and editing techniques specifically for online publication. Students also learn about web site usability research and practice, and general principles of information architecture. Upon completion, students are able to effectively write, organize, and format web content for specific audiences. Course fee: $30.00

Prerequisite: ENG 1010 Students study the communication processes and texts commonly produced in the workplace, such as press releases, brochures, fliers, newsletters, and proposals. Students work individually and collaboratively on case studies and, using appropriate software, write a variety of documents. Keyboarding skills are required; knowledge of Windows or word processing is preferred. Course fee: $30.00

Prerequisite: ENG 1020 Students learn the techniques, such as camera position, angle and movement, lighting, set design, editing, and film symbolism, which directors use to control film meaning and audience response. Films viewed represent a variety of film styles from multiple periods and countries.

Prerequisite: ENG 1020 Students study American film history, learn to view films actively and critically, and to write critical analyses.

Prerequisite: ENG 2140 or ENG 2145 Students study various film genres and analyze the distinctive techniques, such as mise en scene, cinematography, editing, sound, and narrative components characteristic of one or more filmmakers. Students view films in and outside of class, write analytical papers, and give presentations. Offered irregularly.

Prerequisite: ENG 1020 Students examine and critically interpret American literature from Native-American traditions up to the Civil War. The social, political, economic, and philosophical contexts for that literature are also considered. Credit for this course may be earned through CLEP.

Prerequisite: ENG 1020 Students attend readings, view videotapes, and read works by contemporary authors. The connections between specific literary works, students' lives, and larger personal, ethical, and social issues are emphasized. Offered irregularly.
