Basic pottery is a hands-on studio class using clay as a means of expressing the self in the environment. A variety of hand building, wheel forming, surface finishing, glazing and firing techniques will be explored. At the same time, how artisans in other times and other cultures used clay and how the objects they made functioned in their respective societies will be considered. Representative plays from ancient Greek to modern times, including Japanese Noh plays, will be read and discussed in terms of production characteristics.
