    (formerly SPA 203, 302, 321) This course offers a detailed study of some of the most representative literary works, authors and trends of Spanish Literature from the early Medieval Ages to the present day. The main goal of this course is to provide the student with a panorama of Spanish Literature through a cultural, thematic, textual and analytical approach. Class discussions will revolve around topical questions related to the texts and their literary movement to further develop critical reading skills. Prerequisite: SPA 307.     This course offers a study of a varied selection of Hispanic plays from the Middle Ages to the present day. The focus of this study is placed in the historical and cultural context of the texts and their performances. Students will be introduced to the theoretical and analytical aspects of theatre, as well as performing. Prerequisite: SPA 307 and a Literature course or instructor's approval.     (formerly SPA 256) This course explores the literary works of a wide variety of Hispanic women writers from the seventeenth century to the present. Throughout the history of Hispanic literature, women writers have been creating spaces of power in their texts in a very original way. The course will study these spaces in relation to gender, class and race representation in different political and historical periods. Readings will include different genres: poetry, novels, short stories, dramas and essays. Prerequisite: SPA 307 and a Literature course or instructor's approval. (Offered upon request) 3 credits

    This course provides an introduction to the cinema of Latin America and Spain. Its main focus is the exploration of the Hispanic culture, history, society and political issues as represented in different films from Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Spain, among other Hispanic countries. This course includes selected readings on film theory and representation of gender, race and class, as well as on Latin American and Spanish history and culture. Prerequisite: instructor's approval.     (formerly SPA 261) This course provides intensive practice of Spanish in an unstructured field experience. Students devote six field hours and one seminar hour per week. Students will work as translators or interpreters in the community. The one-hour weekly seminar will consist of activities to develop language and communication skills, as well as discussions on cultural issues and implications. Prerequisite: Chairperson's approval.     (formerly SPA 281) This is a capstone course that serves as a culmination of the students' experiences in the study of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures and literatures. Students will engage in research in the field of Latin American and Spanish literature, history and culture; select an area of specialization; and complete a research paper reflective of the methodology, documentation and organization discussed in the course. Students are required to participate in weekly presentations, group discussions and readings. Limited to junior and senior Spanish majors. Chairperson's approval needed. (Offered Spring) 3 credits

    The course corrects basic weaknesses in grammar, sentence structure and reading comprehension. It also introduces students to library research, to writing term papers and to using the computer for doing writing assignments more efficiently. Prerequisite: approval of Program Director.
