    (formerly SPA 144, 206 Hispanic Civilization II; formerly Culture and Civilization of Latin America) This course offers the student an introduction to the cultures of Latin America from a variety of perspectives: its history, geography, society, arts, economy, popular culture, folklore, political and value systems, and, in a larger scope, its place in the global community. The course is an exploration of Latin America that goes back in time to study its cultural origins and historical evolution and to analyze the factors that have made Latin America what it is today: a pluralistic, multicultural and multilingual group of nations.     This is an interdisciplinary course that explores different aspects of the Hispanic contemporary culture. Its aim is to introduce the student to different cultural manifestations such as music, art, film, food and daily life through different Spanish and Latin American contemporary literary readings. This course is intended for the high-intermediate student of Spanish. Prerequisite: Departmental approval. (Offered Spring) 3 credits

    This course offers students the opportunity to read and study the literary works of worldwide renowned Latin American and Spanish authors that, due to the language barrier, they would have never encountered: from Cervantes and Garcia Lorca to Jorge Luis Borges and Garcia Marquez, among many others. This course does not fulfill the foreign language requirement. 3 credits

    This course provides the student with an advanced study of selected Spanish grammar topics. This course has a workshop format where students are assigned different writing projects, which are discussed and edited in class by peers. Prerequisite: SPA 305 or equivalent.     This course will offer an analysis of contemporary oral usage through the study of film, video and audio materials as well as printed texts. Emphasis will be placed in pronunciation practice. Students will study techniques of oral presentation. Assignments are designed to promote the development of persuasive skills and include formal debates on contemporary issues and other public speaking activities. Prerequisite: SPA 305 or equivalent.     (SPAIN) An intensive advanced course that provides students with an in-depth examination of Spanish grammar topics. Students will have opportunities to select effective strategies and techniques for the application of rules to enhance communicative proficiency. Selected readings on Spanish Culture and Literature will be introduced. (These two courses may only be taken in Molloy's Summer Study Abroad Program in Spain.) 3, 3 credits

    This course is intended as an introduction to translation from English into Spanish and vice versa for students that already have considerable linguistic resources in both languages. Even though this is mainly a practical and hands-on course, it also involves discussion of issues related to Linguistics and Translation Theory that directly concern specific problems encountered in the translating process. The student will develop translation skills and strategies by being exposed to different types of authentic texts: journalistic, scientific, technological, literary, commercial and cinematic. In order to further improve the student's reading and writing skills, in both the Source Language and the Target Language, the course will also focus on grammatical and stylistic issues, as well as on textual analysis. Prerequisite: SPA 307 and a Literature course or instructor's approval. (Offered upon request) 3 credits

    (formerly SPA 251, 311) This course introduces the student to the most important and influential artistic and ideological movements of 20th and 21st centuries in Spain. Throughout the course, the student will study representative literary works by authors from the "Generacion del 98'' to the latest contemporary writers. The selection of works is varied in order to encompass different genres-novel, short story, poetry, drama, essay styles and worldviews, and to exercise different critical and analytical approaches to the texts. Prerequisite: SPA 307. 3 credits
