(formerly SPA 129, 139) These are introductory courses that focus on the development of communicative proficiency in the Spanish language. These courses afford students the opportunities to practice speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Spanish, as well as to gain knowledge and understanding of the culture. Particular emphasis is placed on the systematic mastery of vocabulary and conversational skills in a school setting. SPA 109 is intended for students with little or no previous experience in the language. SPA 110 is intended for students who have taken SPA 109 or with 3 or more years of Spanish at the secondary level. Students are required to complete 1 hour of lab work per week in the Language Resource Center. (SPA 109-Offered Fall, SPA 110-Offered Spring) Fee-$25.00 each course. 3, 3 credits

An intensive introductory course focusing on the development of communication skills in Spanish: speaking, writing, listening and reading. Special attention will also be placed in building the student's vocabulary and basic grammar knowledge. (These two courses must be taken together and only in Molloy's Summer Study Abroad Program in Spain.) 3, 3 credits

(formerly SPA 135; formerly Spanish for Communication) This course is designed to reinforce and expand the necessary skills acquired in previous courses and to achieve the next step towards communicative proficiency. Emphasis is placed on the study of more advanced grammatical structures, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. Students will read a variety of high interest texts as well as experience videos, music, news broadcasts, etc., that provide models for discussion and writing, and that are a means for understanding the contemporary culture of Latin America and Spain. The Department strongly recommends that students take SPA 215 or 216 concurrently with this course. Prerequisite: SPA 102 (104, 110) or equivalent. Students are required to complete 1 hour of lab work per week in the Language Resource Center. (Offered Fall, Spring) Fee-$25.00. 3 credits

An intensive course designed to apply communicative skills to everyday life situations and to develop language fluency skills. This course will introduce different readings and topics related to Spanish Culture. (These two courses must be taken together and only in Molloy's Summer Study Abroad Program in Spain.) 3, 3 credits

(formerly SPA 151, 152, 153; formerly Spanish Conversation I, II) These courses are designed to reinforce oral expression and comprehension. Spoken Spanish is stressed by a review of grammar and idiomatic strategies for self-expression and the expression of ideas on topics of current interest and cultural significance in the Spanish-speaking world. Materials used include journalistic texts, films, videos, audiotapes, songs and short stories. The Department strongly recommends that students take SPA 201 concurrently with this course. Prerequisite: SPA 102 (104, 110) or equivalent. Students are required to complete 1 hour of lab work per week in the Language Resource Center. (Offered Fall, Spring) Fee-$25.00 for each course. 3, 3 credits

(formerly SPA 161, 225 Advanced Grammar and Composition) This course will provide students with an in-depth examination of Spanish grammar topics in context. Students will have opportunities to select effective strategies and techniques for the application of rules to enhance communicative proficiency. Emphasis will be placed on the correction of errors in structure and syntax that interfere with the communication process. Prerequisite: SPA 201 or 309 or equivalent. (Offered Spring) 3 credits

This course provides the student with the writing techniques and skills to enhance their communication abilities. This course has a particular emphasis in practicing writing as a process and a means of developing critical thinking. It includes the review of fundamental grammar structures that interfere with the writing process. Students will have the opportunity of practicing different writing genres: description, narration, reporting, argumentation and exposition. Prerequisite: SPA 201 or 309 or equivalent. (formerly SPA 171, 301 Introduction to Spanish and Latin American Literature) This course is designed to prepare the intermediate students of Spanish to further advance their knowledge of the Spanish language and culture and acquire critical reading skills. Following contemporary reading theory, reading in this course is to be understood as a complex cognitive process in which reader and text interact to (re)create meaningful discourse. Therefore, the main focus of this course centers around the acquisition of reading skills and strategies (reaction, anticipation, synthesis, interpretation, categorization, etc) while reading different types of texts: non-prose, expository prose, editorials and opinion, fiction, poetry and drama. It offers a review of grammatical structures and syntax as well as textual analysis. Prerequisite: SPA 201 or 309 or equivalent. (Offered Fall) 3 credits

(formerly SPA 147, 148) Designed for students who speak Spanish at home but have been educated primarily in English, this course enhances oral and written expression as well as reading comprehension. It includes extensive practice with the conventions of written Spanish and many activities designed to expand vocabulary. Course materials include literary and journalistic readings, films and videos selected to provide an understanding of the Spanish-speaking community in the United States, Latin America and Spain. This class is accepted in lieu of SPA 201 and 215 for the Spanish major. Prerequisite: Chairperson's approval. (Offered Fall) 3 credits

(formerly SPA 143, 205 Hispanic Civilization I; formerly Culture and Civilization of Spain) This course offers the student an introduction to the cultures of Spain from a variety of perspectives: its history, geography, society, arts, economy, popular culture, folklore, political and value systems, its role as a member of the European Union and, in a larger scope, its place in the global community. The course is an exploration of Spain that goes back in time in order to study its cultural origins and historical evolution and to analyze the factors that have made what Spain is today: a pluralistic, multicultural, and multilingual nation. Prerequisite: SPA 305 or equivalent. 3 credits
