Course content includes sight singing chromatic melodies, melodic and rhythmic dictation, two part dictation, aural recognition of chromatic intervals and seventh chords; symmetrical and altered scales, the church modes, and seventh chords and their inversions. Prerequisite: MUS 204 (Spring) 2 credits

This is a study of impressionism in music and the arts, and symbolism in literature. It begins with the study of those who foreshadowed the impressionistic period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and continues with a detailed study of the representatives of this period such as Debussy, Ravel, Delius, Griffes, etc. (in music), Monet, Manet, Renoir, etc. (in art), Verlaine, Poe, Baudelaire, etc. (in literature), plus impressionistic sculpture and architecture. This course concludes with discussions of the effects of impressionism in future ventures in music, art and literature. (Satisfies general education) 3 credits

A study of the evolution of this unique American music phenomenon, which combines the African Negro heritage with the European forms of the New World. It covers the work songs, spirituals and the blues; the birth of jazz in New Orleans and its dissemination to St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City and New York. Students will review the great innovators and popularizers of the entire spectrum of jazz, its forms and structure. (Satisfies general education) 3 credits

The style of Tonal Counterpoint - Polyphonic procedures in the style of Bach and his contemporaries with practical application will comprise the main thrust of the course. Some examination of the polyphonic techniques of the Classical and Romantic periods will be included especially. Prerequisite: MUS 112, 213. 3 credits

Study of the polyphonic style of the 16th Century; two and three part counterpoint using modes and species; introduction to imitation. Prerequisite: MUS 101, 102 3 credits

Continued focus on diatonic harmony, four-part writing skills and analytical abilities. Introduction to chromatic harmony, diminished seventh chords, Neapolitan sixth chords, augmented sixth chords, secondary dominants and modulation. Prerequisite: MUS 112. Fee $70.00. (Spring) 3 credits
