3 class hours Focuses on the insurance and claims processing duties of the medical office professional. The student will gain an understanding of the health care industry, medical coding, insurance claims procedures, and several major health insurance programs. The course will explore the legal aspects of insurance billing, ICD-9-CM coding, HCPCS coding, various medical claims forms, Electronic Date Interchange (EDI), Managed Care, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Medicare, Medicaid, and Workers' Compensation. A billing simulation will be completed as a final evaluation. Pre/Co-requisite: SES 220

4 class hours An intense study of an alphabetic writing system designed to give one a way to write quickly with a minimum of learning time. Prerequisite: SES 118 or SES 113

Speed is increased and accuracy is maintained through out-of-class work and in-class timed writings. The speed and accuracy requirement is one 3-minute writing at 50 words per minute with three or fewer errors. Prerequisite: SES 119

3 class hours Introduces students to essential medical terminology analysis through the knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Also included will be vocabulary that cannot be analyzed, verbal pronunciation, medical abbreviations, spelling, and medical vignettes.

3 class hours Includes lecture, discussion, and/or experience concerning office-support topics; technical skills and knowledge; advanced word processing production; communication, problem-solving, compilation, office-support, employment, and critical-thinking skills. An application project, professional project, and teaching presentation are required. Prerequisite: CIS 112 or SES 213

4 class hours Reinforces theory presented in SES 214 with the focus being on applicable use of the shorthand skill. Initiating the skill in the office setting and the producing of a professional product through advanced spelling, communication skills for the processing of words, and simulated assignments are emphasized.
