Urban Ecology is the study of cities, including human inhabitants, as functioning ecosystems, supporting a complex web of life. In this course students will learn how basic ecological principals can be applied to the study of urban ecosystems and the effects of cities and urbanization on regional and global environments. Through a combination of lectures, readings and discussions, site visits and service learning, this course will provide an overview of interactions, at multiple scales, between the built environment and the natural environment with particular focus on New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Region.

A lecture course to introduce the types of questions asked by animal behaviorists, theoretical disciplines posing these questions, and recent research in behavior as related to the environment, social behavior, and reproduction. " EBIO 304 (“General Ecology”), EBIO 308 (“Process of Evolution”), EBIO 408 (“Biostatistics & Experimental Design”), EBIO 368 (“Comparative Animal Behavior”), and EBIO 329 (“Behavioral Ecology”) are recommended, but not required." "" " This course provides students the opportunity to design, implement, and write-up an independent research project related to behavioral ecology." " Research will be conducted on live animals at the Audubon Zoo." " The course will emphasize general principles of experimental design; the collection, organization and analysis of data; and written and oral presentation of results." " The course consists of 3 hours of laboratory per week and 2 hours of seminar per week, all at the zoo. Note: Fulfills the college intensive-writing requirement. (Same as PSYC 3690).

Topics include evolutionary mechanisms, history of evolution in psychology and the adaptive nature of sensory processes, language, social behaviors, reproduction and psychopathology. Prof. Balée. Interactions between local peoples and Amazonian landscapes from prehistory to the present. Amazonian landscapes as an analytic unit will be examined from the interdisciplinary perspective of historical ecology. Changes and development of forests and savannas since the arrival of human beings. Historical, ecological, cultural forces involved in biological and edaphic diversity in modern forests. Long-term effects of prehistoric and historic human occupations and manipulation of landscapes. Implications for conservation and development. (Same as EBIO 6710 and ANTH 3710/6710.)
