    3 credit hours The Health Occupations I course introduces students to the healthcare industry and provides students with basic knowledge about various career opportunities in healthcare. Classroom discussions focus on educational and training requirements, salary expectations, and the nature of the work for a variety of healthcare positions. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to identify specific roles and responsibilities of many different health care professions. Additional topics include the history and current trends in healthcare, along with interpersonal dynamics and communication.

    1 credit hours The Home Health Aide course provides students with basic principles of direct nursing care. The students will demonstrate knowledge of nursing care in the skills lab and in clinical practice. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible for KDHE certification to become a KS certified Home Health aide. (Pre-requisite: must be a Certified Nurse Aide).

    3 credit hours The Certified Nurse Aide course emphasizes basic principles of direct nursing care. The students will gain knowledge of nursing care in the skills lab and in clinical practice performed at a local long-term healthcare facility. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible for KDHE certification to become a KS certified nurse aide. (Prerequisite: must pass reading comprehension test by Division of Health personnel).

    1 credit hour The Nutrition Assistant, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, provides the direct care of assisting long term care residents to eat in the dining room. The role and responsibilities of the nutrition assistant as outlined by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment will be covered. Current issues related to the effects of nutritional status on a person's overall health are discussed throughout the course. The use of nutritional diet therapy to treat many of the major chronic health conditions is emphasized. All 1st semester courses must be passed with a "C"or better to allow the student to enter in the 2nd semester.

    1 credit hour Restorative aide students will learn principles of basic rehabilitative care to promote or maintain optimal wellness. The student will continue to reinforce and integrate knowledge of rehabilitative theories into the healthcare setting.

    1 credit hour Students will discuss the aging process and its effects on the body and mind of the long-term-care residents. Students will plan programs and activities to enhance orientation, socialization and therapy for the residents. Skills will also include documentation and care plans.

    1 credit hour First Aid students will learn to recognize a serious medical emergency and demonstrate the knowledge of how to access EMS. The student will be able to furnish temporary assistance until medical care is obtained. Hands-on skills are practiced through a variety of emergency scenarios. CPR is included in conjunction with the First Aid course to teach students basic life support techniques. AHA CPR certification may be achieved through successful completion of the course.

    3 credit hours In Health Occupations II students explore legal and ethical issues pertaining to the U.S. healthcare system and gain an understanding of the importance of confidentiality and patient documentation. Career planning for seeking a career in healthcare is included to assist students in their job search. Hands-on experience is obtained through clinical shadowing experiences with healthcare providers. Students can select from a variety of participating health care professionals and spend time in the facilities to receive direct exposure to the work environment.

    1 credit hour The social service professional, led by the Social Services Director, is responsible for assuring that quality social services are provided to residents and their families, assisting them with the social and emotional aspects of illness and disability. The student will also learn to promote a therapeutic community including residents, families and the staff so that supportive relationships will be developed.

    4 credit hours The course includes review of clinical application of dental materials, techniques in radiography, oral anatomy and clinical application of dental hygiene techniques and instrumentation, oral health products, patient motivation and educational techniques, preventive strategies including use of an intraoral clinic camera and an introduction to selected dental specialties. Students will be prepared for medical and dental emergencies, which may be encountered in various practice settings. An introduction to the dental hygiene process (ADPIE) and working with special-needs patient populations will be provided. 2 hours lecture/ 4 hr lab/day for 8 weeks (M-F)
