EMS 230: Hospital Clinical

8 credit hours This third semester course will provide the student with experience providing patient care in a controlled, supervised clinical setting. The student will complete a minimum of 348 clocks hours in a clinical setting (i.e. medical clinic, hospital, physicians office) as assigned by the instructor or clinical coordinator. This experience will include an Operating Room rotation for intubation, Emergency Department, Intensive/Cardiac Care Unit, Pediatrics, Labor and Delivery, Respiratory Therapy, and Behavioral Unit. The student will perform skills learned in the classroom on real patients in these settings while being closely supervised by physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, certified registered nurse anesthetists and registered nurses.

13 credit hours This fourth semester course will provide the student with experience providing patient care in a supervised pre-hospital setting. The student will complete a minimum of 576 clock hours in the pre-hospital internship setting with a Kansas licensed, Type 1 ambulance service as assigned by the instructor or clinical coordinator. During this internship the student will progress from providing Basic Life Support treatments to actual patients to being the lead technician directing and providing advanced life support to patients in need of such care.

4 credit hours Students will assess and utilize software for electronic page assembly of text and graphic elements. Students will explore page layout and design concepts as well as scanning equipment and output devices. Students will gain an overview of the graphic communication and reproduction process and be able to integrate page layout software into that process. The course will include daily exercises, assignments and lectures. Students will demonstrate an understanding of digital file preparation/output and imposition procedures when developing single and multiple-page layout documents. Topics will also include: 4 color process, step and repeat functions, job tracking sheets, document binding systems, preflight and file repair, imagesetter use and calibration, and digital proofing systems.
