The course covers the entire gamut of opera from musical preparation to final stage production. Each student is required to learn a role from an opera and to perform it in public; further he/she participates in the technical development of the production in the ESU Opera Theatre. All students participate in the musical preparation and staging of an operatic work.

Studying the diverse world of music will lead the student to an understanding of music as an aspect of culture and to recognize that each culture creates the kind of music necessary to reflect values and traditions. In addition to the music sounds of the various cultures, the study will consider society¿s ideas about music and the events in which music plays a part.

General consideration is given to sacred and secular monophony and polyphony, Renaissance instrumental music, and the dramatic church and instrumental music of the Baroque Period.
