Beginning with the its roots in both African and Western European music, all of the various jazz styles from ragtime to modern fusion will be discussed in relation to their social and historical context and the artists who brought this music to life.

(2 Credit Hours) Designed for all musicians, this course will cover the basics of conducting any ensemble, including baton technique, score reading, rehearsal preparation, and ensemble techniques. Practical experience in conducting various ensembles will be an integral part of the course.
