Participants in this training will develop an accurate image of what "mental health" really is and learnhow life events, culture and environment, biology, and relationships all serve as roads to understanding and wellness. Participants will also learn how to create safe and nurturing learning environments by understanding the impact that room arrangements, labeling, and comfortable settings have on children and caregivers. Finally, participants will learn strategies for working with families to create a healthy atmoDodge City Community College and Area Technical Center | 2005-2007 Catalog sphere for children by using a method of knowing, informing, discussing with, and supporting families.

Background information on parenting emphasizes the importance of parents as persons who are growing and developing along with their child. (4 Credit Hours) Designed for the student to utilize knowledge gained in previous courses and practica, this direct experience course involves the student in extensive curriculum planning and executing activities in an early childhood setting. (3 Credit Hours) "First Start" is a national training program to prepare paraprofessionals(child care providers and educational assistants) for direct care of infants, toddlers, and young children with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Major sections are special procedures and skills; communication with parents and other household residents; and cooperation between health, education, and child care services. Other education and health professionals, as well as parents, may find this course beneficial. S
