RDG 088 is for students who score 0-58 on the COMPASS Test and are reading below a fifth grade level. In addition to the COMPASS, students take a TABE Test, an individual phonemic test, and a sight word test to ensure their accurate placement in RDG 088. Emphasis is on phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, vocabulary development, and basic comprehension. Writing and spelling skills are integrated with reading. The grades used are "S" (satisfactory) and "U" (unsatisfactory). This course may be repeated three times (four total) by students who need additional time to develop basic reading skills. RDG 090 is deisgned for students who have scored 0-58 on the COMPASS Test and are reading on grade levels 5.0-6.9. In addition to the COMPASS Test, students take a TABE test and an IRI (Individual Reading Inventory) to ensure accurate placement in RDG 090. This course reviews basic reading skills, including dictionary use, vocabulary development, location of main ideas and supporting details, and the relationships of transitions and patterns of organization. A reading process is introduced through the practice of previewing, predicting, inferencing, self-monitoring, and developing flexible reading rates. This course may be repeated three times (four total) by students who need additional time to develop basic reading skills. RDG 092 is designed for students who have scored 0-58 on the COMPASS Test and are reading on a 7.0 to 8.9 reading level. In addition to the COMPASS Test, students take a TABE Test to ensure accurate placement in RDG 092. Strategies for reading comprehension and critical reading are taught and practiced through textbook use and a variety of reading genres. Vocabulary development is taught by the use of context clues, a dictionary, a Thesaurus, and student-selected vocabulary from RDG 092 and other courses. Student writing is integrated with the reading process. This course provides the student with an opportunity for actual clinical experience under the direct supervision of a registered technologist (R.T.). Each student will spend approximately 200 clock hours in a private physician's office, clinic, or hospital x-ray department. The clinical assignments will be on a 2 days/week basis for approximately 12 weeks. This course provides the student with an introduction to the clinical practice of Radiologic Technology. The student will study basic anatomy and positioning techniques for radiographic examinations of the chest and extremities; safe and proper use of x-ray equipment; and, correct methods of handling and processing radiographic film. A special section on patient care (including standard precautions) is also incorporated in the course.
