    This course is a continuation of the study and practice of skills necessary to care for patients in traumatic, respiratory, medical, and cardiac emergencies. Pulmonology, cardiology, neurology, obstetrics, pediatrics, and patients with special challenges are included in this unit. Assessment skills and treatment protocols are emphasized. Offered: Spring Prerequisite: EMT 111. If taking BIO 211/212 sequence, it is recommended that BIO 212 be taken prior to or concurrent with EMT 121.     This practicum consists of supervised clinical experience in an Emergency Medical System (EMS) approved hospital. Students will perform and document clinical procedures as directed by the program coordinator and hospital preceptors. Assignments will be made to each of the following departments: Emergency Care, Coronary/Intensive Care, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Occupational Health. Emphasis will be placed on gaining clinical experience in all types of emergency situations. Emphasis will also be placed on the organization and administration of hospital and EMS policies and procedures.     This course has two main components: (a) review of grammar fundamentals, and (b) basic steps to establish clear organization, unity and coherence in a composition or essay. Students earn a satisfactory (S) or an unsatisfactory (U) grade. Thus, students are encouraged to develop their writing skills in a pressure-free atmosphere of cooperation, without having to compete for grades. This course may be repeated three times (four total) by students who need additional help. Along with ENG 098, this course provides a solid foundation in grammar and composition for either ENGL 101 or ENG 100. This course is recommended for students who score 16 or below on the Writing Skills section of the COMPASS test (or equivalent ASSET score).     This course is designed for those students who are apprehensive about or expect to have difficulty with college-level course work. This course will cover the basic college survival skills: reading and understanding college-level materials, organizing time, taking notes, studying for and taking tests, etc. This course will also concentrate on critical thinking and reading skills. This course is especially recommended for students scoring between 59-82 on the Reading Skills section of the COMPASS test (or equivalent ASSET score). This course may be repeated three times (four total) by students needing additional help.     This course will concentrate on well organized, accurately stated, skillfully worded paragraphs and compositions. Students will learn to recognize and correct their own errors in the following areas: subject and verb agreement, pronoun and antecedent agreement, pronoun reference, sentence structure, punctuation, parallel structure, diction, and possessive case. It is designed for students who felt uncomfortable with high school English courses or who received a score of 17-37 on the Writing Skills section of the COMPASS test (or equivalent ASSET score), or who have been out of school for a number of years and feel a need for a refresher course, or who did not complete one or more years of English with grades of "C" or better before leaving high school. This course may be repeated three times (four total) by students needing additional help.     This course is intended to prepare the student with the writing, grammar and mechanics needed for employment. To receive credit the student must show proficiency in grammar and mechanics.     This course is the first in a sequence of two freshman composition and rhetoric courses. It is designed for individuals planning to pursue a bachelor's degree as well as those who wish to develop proficiency in writing. Emphasis is on critical reading, organization, logical thought, paragraphing, development, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation. Also studied will be argumentation and inductive/deductive reasoning.     This course is second in a sequence of two freshman composition and rhetoric courses. Emphasis is on reading and writing about various types of prose, especially short fiction and the novel. A research paper that demonstrates analysis of the novel is the primary writing activity.     This course is designed to teach the basic concepts of report writing for the business and industrial environment. Students will be taught techniques for gathering information, audience analysis, expository writing techniques, information organizational procedures, and methods of achieving a clear style of writing. Students will study routine and non-routine reports, business research reports, and business plans, policies, and procedures.     This course introduces the student to the functions of mass media with emphasis on the recognition of what makes news; the obtaining of facts throught interview, investigation and research; and the writing of types of stories such as feature, news story, and editorial in an acceptable journalistic style. Also, the student has an opportunity to develop a working knowledge of the mechanics of producing a newspaper, e.g., paper layout, advertising, etc. Underlying the course is the ideal of the dedication of the news media and the responsibility of the journalist to the public interest. Students who have completed or are currently enrolled in this course are eligible for enrollment in ENG 140.
