    NURS 3102 Nursing Practice I: Health Assessment and Promotion 5 credits 3 class hours, 6 clinical hours Pre-Requisite: BIOL 3410 Co-Requisite: NURS 3100 This course focuses on health history and physical examination skills, as well as health promotion, restoration, and maintenance activities related to caring for diverse clients. Emphasis is on the cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills necessary to perform a complete head-to-toe physical examination. It also includes clinical variations, developmental tasks, and health promotion, restoration, and maintenance activities related to the infant, child and older adult, as well as significant cultural variations. Application of clinical assessment and clinical judgement is assessed in the laboratory setting. Cultural and ethnic factors impacting health care beliefs and practices will be explored.

    NURS 3103 Holistic Care 3 credits 2 class hours, 3 clinical hours Pre-Requisites: Core Area A - F Co-Requisites: NURS 3100, NURS 3102, BIOL 3410 This course provides the foundation for clinical practice, recognizing the uniqueness of each patient and the importance of continuity of care. The nursing process is a framework for care with attention to health care needs, nutritional status, culture and their placement on their health care continuum. The importance of comprehensive patient care is applied with a focus on beginning technical competency used to assess, implement and evaluate nursing care. Students will be challenged to use introspection and conscious examination of their own belief and value systems to increase their sensitivity, respect, and caring for others.

    NURS 3201 Research and Evidence Based Practice 3 credits, 3 class hours Pre-Requisites: NURS 3100, NURS 3102, NURS 3103, MATH 2112 Co-Requisites: none This course presents an overview of basic nursing research concepts and processes. Critical analysis of published research and evaluation for applicability to professional nursing evidence based practice. The importance of integrating research findings into nursing practice will be stressed.

    NURS 3203 Nursing Practice II: Care of Adults 8 credits 4 class hours, 12 clinical hours Pre-Requisites: NURS 3100, NURS 3102, NURS 3103 Medical-surgical concepts are related to physiological and psychological changes experienced by the adult experiencing an alteration in health. Concepts/exemplars forming the basis for nursing care of these clients will include topics such as: oxygenation, fluid alternations, and metabolic changes.

    NURS 3204 Pharmacology 4 credits 4 class hours Pre-Requisites: NURS 3110, NURS 3102, NURS 3103 The basic pathophysiologicl concepts are presented that are essential when caring for clients receiving medication for treatment of all body systems. The integration of pharmacokinetics and patient care are applied to clinical settings. Medication administration and calculation is an integral part of this course.

The impact of the economics and delivery of health care and health policies are examined from a national and global perspective.

    NURS 4100 Nursing Practice III: Family and Child Care 4 credits 4 class hours, 12 clinical hours Pre-Requisites: NURS 3201, NURS 3203, NURS 3204 Co-Requisites: NURS 4101, 4102 The focus of this course is the integration of nursing practice concepts to the family, pediatric and mental health client. A developmental framework for understanding the life cycle, physiological and psychological changes provides the foundation for care giving. This course will also provide the oportunity for the student to focus on the role of the nurse in providing care with the family in the childbearing stage and the pediatric client. Consideration is given to the growth and development period of the child and adolescent. Students will apply the nursing process with women, children, and families whoc mage vary in age, ethnicity, and cultural backgrounds. Family and child experiences related to this content are also included in the community course (NURS 4101). The concepts of communication, pharmacology, nutrition and education are integrated.

    NURS 4101 Nursing Practive IV: Community as Client 5 credits 3 class hours, 6 clinical hours Pre-Requisites: NURS 3201, NURS 3203, NURS 3204 This course is designed to develop skills essential to population based nursing practice and requires integration of prior knowledge and skills. Emphasis is placed on the role of the professional nurse in providing health care to clients/aggregates in a variety of culturally diverse communities. Tools of the trade including epidemiological methods will be examined. The student will learn methods for assessing community health needs, techniques used torestore and maintain the health care of populations, and strategies for promoting wellness. Health care policies and systems will be viewed from their impact on health and wellness and program delivery. The clinical experiences will expose students to a variety of community health environments, health programs and policies and their impact on care. Opportunities to practice health promotion behaviors and critique healthcare delivery systems will be emphasized. Physical and mental health issues will be studied and interventions will be formulated and applied in the practice of community health nursing.

    NURS 4102 Nursing Practice V: Psychosocial Aspects of Care 5 credits 2 class hours, 3 clinical hours Pre-Requisites: NURS 3203, NURS 3204 The focus of this course is the integration of nursing practice concepts to the psychiatric mental health patient. This course will provide the opportunity for the student to focus on the role of the nurse in providing care to the patient in the community on in an in-patient setting. Because the comprehensive approach to mental health care is multidisciplinary and collaborative, the clinical experiences will be integrated into family/child and community health nursing course. The clinical, legal and ethical aspects of care are integrated with the professional concepts of communication and pharmacology. The holistic model provides the framework for addressing the needs of these clients.

    NURS 4103 Pathopharmacology 2 credits 2 class hours The importance of medication knowledge and management is critical to the role of the professional nurse. This course combines Pathophysiology, the study of disease proceses, with pharmacology, the use of medication to address physiological and psychological issues. Major health problems are taught conceptually and address pediatric, adult and aging issues in the medication administration and management. Concepts that are essential for understanding and treating alterations in organ and system function are analyzed. Clinical presentations stress the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and pharmacological management.
