English literature from its beginnings through 1485. Course includes study of medieval phonology, morphology, and syntax. Writers include the Beowulf poet and other Old English authors, early Middle English lyrics, and the major fitures of the fourteenth century (the Pearl poet, Chaucer, Langland, Gower). In alternate years, course will be devoted to Chaucer and his context. Crosslisted with ENGL 5440G.
